About Nate & Gretchen

Nate and Gretchen have over two decades of combined dog training experience. Their passion is developing dogs to reach their full potential and helping clients develop better working relationships with their companions through improved communication and understanding. Their training now focuses on sporting dogs and companion dogs of all breeds, sizes, and temperaments.

Unlike most training outfits, Nate and Gretchen do all of the training, from start to finish, themselves. This ensures each dog is getting the most out of their time at Iron Oak. More importantly, they spend a significant amount of time helping owners understand how to be solid coaches and leaders for their dogs and maintain their training at home. Iron Oak Dog Co. looks forward to working with you and your dog!

Gretchen and Nate train and test their personal dogs through the JGV and NAVHDA hunt test organizations. To date, Gretchen and Nate have successfully handled nine dogs through performance tests including one Suchensieger (high in trial), and a Prize 1 Utility test with a max score of 204.

They breed Kleiner Münsterländer through their KlM-GNA approved kennels v.d. Wildblumen and v.d. Eiseneiche, with a heavy focus on maximizing the early phases of puppy development and offering unparalleled support for their puppy buyers. Occasionally they also offer started and finished versatile companion gundogs.

Nate and Gretchen are avid public land small game hunters. They travel around the country each hunting season to explore the vast public land system while following their dogs in pursuit of furred and feathered quarry. They also organize hunt camps to help ease the learning curve for hunters new to these kinds of experiences.

They are currently accepting new clients both for companion (pet) dog training and companion gundog training. Their training services are open to all breeds, sizes, and temperaments. Gretchen and Nate have experience in obedience training, behavior modification, puppy development and imprinting, and hunting dog training.

    BREEDING PROGRAM DIRECTOR

Dogs have been a part of my life since I can remember. My first dog, a Brittany named Becky, was a gift from my parents for my 3rd birthday. Fast forward a few (many, many) years and I have a sporting breed once again, the Kleine Munsterlander.

My passion lies with puppies and helping clients connect and communicate with them right from the start. The ability to take advantage of optimal learning opportunities during the sensitive developmental periods, before certain behaviors have a chance to manifest into problems, is priceless. I enjoy training and hunting my Kleiner Munsterlander, Ebbi and Archer (Ebbi’s son).

    TRAINING PROGRAM DIRECTOR

I have had a lifelong love of dogs and began my training journey in 2012 in the shelter and rescue system working with some of the most unfortunate cases in Baltimore City. I opened Baltimore Dogworks, LLC in 2015 and we quickly became a local favorite due to our ability to work with tough behavioral cases, provide honest feedback and information, and apply various training modalities with tact and intelligence. In 2024 we rebranded to Iron Oak Dog Company as our service offerings continue to expand into versatile hunting dogs and new hunter education.

I am the current president and past training director of the Potomac NAVHDA chapter, and a regional representative for KlM-GNA. I am a member of the Atlantic Chapter of VDD-GNA, KlM-GNA, NA-JGHV.
