Companion Dog Training

Dog obedience training, behavior modification, & aggression rehab in central Maryland and south central Pennsylvania  including York, Gettysburg, Hanover, Timonium, Baltimore, Catonsville, Ellicott City, Glen Burnie, Columbia, Elkridge, Westminster, Mt. Airy, Frederick, Damascus, Poolesville, Bethesda

Imagine having a dog that is reliable, responsive, and respectful. Even better, they actually enjoy doing the things you ask! Dogs in our training system are active and engaged learners who like to listen, cooperate, and behave. And when you have a dog who is internally motivated to do the right thing, it makes your job that much easier!

Because we focus on teaching you universal principles, instead of rote practices, we apply the same system to develop obedience skills and to resolve behavior problems. Once you have a good grasp of the system, it will be easy for you to create and execute a training plan to meet your training goals and resolve behavior problems.

Training is a process, not an event. To that end, all of our in-person program offerings include membership to our Training Club drop in group classes for ongoing skill maintenance and development.

Let’s Talk!

The first step for any of our training programs is to schedule a free phone consultation. We’d like to learn more about you, your dog, and your training goals.

Foundation Training

It all starts with Foundation Training here at Iron Oak Dog Co. Build a training culture of enrichment, communication, and cooperation that benefits both ends of the leash. With a solid foundation in place you can resolve behavior problems and pursue advanced training such as off leash training and working dog disciplines. Foundation packages are for dogs 5+ months old (see below for puppy development programs). This program works to achieve standards of behavior that meet the requirements for the AKC Canine Good Citizen and UKC Socialized Pet Obedience Test certifications. In this program you will learn:

  • about your dog’s thought process and value system

  • how to get your dog invested in the learning process

  • to condition markers to reward good decisions

  • to use the leash as a communication tool

  • the process of building reliable and enthusiastic behaviors

  • to teach the five basic obedience behaviors (place, recall, sit, down, and heel)

  • how to address undesirable behaviors

  • how to generalize and proof training for the real world and to resolve behavior problems
